Well Equipped - The Eleventh Day of LCC
So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. – Ephesians 4:11-13
Christ himself has given us people in His body, the Church, who are specifically charged with preparing us for works of service. Pay close attention to this. These are not people who are set apart to be above us, to dictate to us or even to lead us. They are amongst us with a specific skill set (though all of us have gifts imparted by the Holy Spirit). They have a specific calling (though all of us are called). They play a particular role (though all of us have a role to play in the body).
The reason I’m making such a point here is more than mere semantics. Far too often we, and I’m guilty of this, too, stratify the body into those who are in charge and those who aren’t. We use terms that give us permission to sit in the seats while others do the work. In our desire to respect and honor our pastors and teachers we can actually frustrate the accomplishment of what they are called to do! We allow ourselves to be deceived into thinking that we lack whatever it is to do whatever it is we find difficult, challenging or downright scary.
In relationship with God, through the saving work of Jesus Christ and filled with His Holy Spirit, you lack nothing! More than this, you are surrounded by an entire community of people, some of whom are tasked with equipping you for acts of service. All that’s left then is for you to submit to the equipping. Attend worship, listen attentively, participate in Bible study, volunteer in your area of interest, exercise your skills, and as you do the body of Christ will be built up. When you attend church, Bible study and small group this week and from now on, pay attention with this prayer in mind...
Lord, what is it you’re equipping me for through these faithful servants within your body? Open my eyes and ears to receive all you have for me so that through my service your Son’s Body may be built up. Amen.
