Facing the Future -The Eighth Day of LCC

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. – 1 Timothy 4:12

Experts who study generations, the ones who give us labels like Boomers, Gen Xers and Millennials, have made some very interesting observations. It seems there is a discernible pattern to the generations. They say the Millennial generation (the leading edge of which is now approaching 30 years old) is most like the generation that fought in World War II, the Hero generation.

Not only that but they say the Millennials are quite fond of the Boomers (the trailing edge of which is now entering its 50’s). Have you noticed the surging popularity of Tony Bennett or the sold out concerts for 60’s and 70’s rock bands? Millennials embrace teamwork, organization and seek the counsel of older generations. What this means, the experts say, is that the wisdom and insight of Christian Boomers coupled with the energy and idealism of the Millennials has the power to revive the Church in the U.S. and around the world.

A future where young people are fully embraced, encouraged and empowered to accomplish all God has intended for them is a bright one, indeed. In my youth ministry years I would bristle when people would say young people are the future of the church…and I still reject that thought today. Young people are the Church now along with those of all ages. If you’re a Boomer consider how you can connect with Millennials to encourage and empower them. If you’re a Millennial continue to seek the wisdom and insight of older generations. We are one Church together for the sake of the Gospel.

Prayer
Father, thank you for all the generations that unite together in your Church. With each new day connect us across those generations so that the wisdom, insight, energy, idealism and passion you’ve given to your body is fully engaged. Amen.
