Guidance - Part 3
For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end. Psalms 48:14
So, how can we be guided by the Holy Spirit?
1) By listening continually. Thomas Kelly wrote, 'There is a way of ordering our mental life on more than one level at once. On one level we may be thinking, discussing, seeing ... but... at a more profound level, we may also be in prayer... and a gentle receptiveness to divine breathings'
2) By being responsive. What use is guidance if you are not willing to follow it? And what about the guidance you have already received through the Scriptures? Frank Laubach, whose life was an experiment in listening to God, wrote, 'I never lived until I reached the place where I wholly resolved, and then re-resolved, that I would find God's will, and that I would do it though every fiber in me said no, and that I would win the battle in my thoughts. It was as though some deep artesian well had been struck in my soul...money, praise, poverty, opposition - these made no difference, for they will all alike be forgotten in a thousand years, but this spirit which comes to a mind set upon continuous surrender, this spirit is timeless life'
3) By listening in spite of your doubts. Have the words 'I believe the Lord told me' been abused? You bet. Sometimes ministers use them as a ploy to get money. But do not throw out the baby with the bath water! The truth is, we will not grow spiritually if we close ourselves off to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We must believe, mind-blowing as it sounds, that God really can and does speak to us.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, not only help me hear your voice – but help me obey! In Jesus’ Name, Amen
