Guidance - Part 2

For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end. Psalms 48:14

Before talking about what guidance is, let's understand what it is not:

1) Insider information. We give little thought to spiritual guidance until we face something major, like: who to marry, which house to buy, what stock to invest in. Often what we want is not guidance, it is insider information. The key to knowing whether you really want God's guidance is by asking, 'How often do I seek it when I'm not facing difficulties?'

2) A badge of importance. God once spoke to a donkey. Now, what if the donkey had put on airs and considered itself an exalted spiritual class, above all the other quadrupeds?

3) Passivity. One man said he decided not to seek a certain job on the grounds that it would be a sign of God's will if he got it without trying. So, does that mean whatever happens as a result of our passivity is God's will? That is like sitting in the middle of a busy highway saying, 'If I do not get run over by a car, I will know it is God's doing and not me acting in the flesh'

4) Avoiding risk. Sometimes we do not really want guidance, we want safety! Decision making can be scary and lonely! Even small decisions can create anxiety. God wants us to develop good judgment, and there's no way to do it apart from making choices, taking risks, and occasionally failing. Our Father wants mature children, not robots. His purpose in guidance is not merely to get us to perform the right actions, but to become the right kind of people.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to understand how You work in shaping and molding my life – help me understand it correctly and not how I THINK it should work. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
