Expecting the Unexpected

For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. – 1 Thessalonians 5:2

We cannot, on our own, be ready for Christ’s return. That’s already been done for us. The readiness Christ accomplished on the cross. By grace, through faith, we are ready for Christ’s return through no effort of our own. Living in that readiness, now that’s where the awareness comes in.

You can be aware that a thief could come in the night. It might never happen in your lifetime but that doesn’t change the fact that you’re aware of it. Awareness drives certain behaviors. We install security systems, we have locks and deadbolts on our doors, we put timers on our lights. Awareness causes us to act. In the same way our awareness that Christ is returning, though we don’t know when or how, just the awareness causes us to act.

We tell others of the hope that is within us. We serve those in need. We reach out with love. We regularly gather to worship the Lord and praise His Name. Not so that we will be ready. We can’t be more ready than Christ has made us. No, we do all these things because we are aware. And may God bless us with ever greater awareness with each new day.

Prayer
Lord, thank you for doing all that is necessary for me to be ready for Christ’s return. With each new day may I live out of the awareness that his return is certain. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
