Astonishing
Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door. 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!” 15 “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.” 16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. – Acts 12:13-16
Spend some time talking with the people of Joplin, Missouri and eventually you’ll hear what they call the ‘Angel Stories’. Like the woman in her 80’s trapped in the rubble of her third floor apartment where the staircase had collapsed when two impossibly tall men appeared, one stood below as the other handed down her walker and then her. She settled herself, turned to thank the men and they were gone. Or the young child found huddled in the bushes of a church some distance away from the devastation who, when asked how he got there, told rescuers, ‘the man brought me here.’
Astonishing? Unbelievable? Angels are real and they are as active today as they have ever been. And it’s just as surprising now as it was for the early church gathered in prayer for Peter’s rescue from Herod’s clutches. When an angel of the Lord released his chains and walked him out of prison he showed up at the house and they were so surprised they left him standing on the street while they argued with the servant girl, Rhoda, that it couldn’t be possible. But God’s miraculous rescue and the mighty works of his angels are possible. Pray believing that God, ‘…who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,’ has the power to astonish you!
Today take a step of faith and ask God for the impossible. Remove the limitations you’ve put on your prayers and know that He can do more than you can ask or imagine. And you don’t need to know how he’ll accomplish it, you only need to know that he can.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, forgive my unbelief and help me to truly trust that you can do far more than I can ask or imagine. Encourage me by your Spirit to ask boldly and prepare me to receive all you have in store to astonish me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
