Discovering Your True Identity

Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome." Genesis 32:28

The name Jacob means 'trickster.' Imagine wearing that label, knowing each time someone called your name they believed only the worst about you. And Jacob lived true to his name. He tricked his uncle Laban out of his flocks and his older brother Esau out of his birthright.

Then something changed. Alone in the dark of night, Jacob had an encounter with God. Listen: 'And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a Man with him until the breaking of the day...And He said, "Let Me go, for the day breaketh." And he said, "I will not let Thee go, except Thou bless me." And He said unto him, "What is thy name?" And he said, "Jacob." And He said, "Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed"' (Genesis 32:24&26-28).

Understand this: you may have done what they say you've done but that doesn't mean you're what they say you are! Seek God's face and He'll tell you who you are! Get into His Word and He'll reveal to you your identity and calling. He'll show you that you are: the head and not the tail, above only and not beneath (Deuteronomy 28:13); part of a chosen generation (1 Peter 2:9); more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37); part of a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9); a peculiar treasure (Exodus 19:5); the citizen of a holy nation (Exodus 19:6). Look to God to reveal your true identity. He alone knows all about you!

Prayer
Heavenly Father, mold me into what you want me to be and rescue me from my past. Change and name me! In Jesus’ Name, Amen
