Slaying Your Giants

David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 1 Samuel 17:45

Let us re-examine the story of David and Goliath and learn the following lessons:

1) You must confront what's threatening you! After 40 days of listening to Goliath's threats something happened - the enemy became stronger and God's people became weaker. What you try to avoid or outrun, you empower!

2) You must recall what you've learned! David remembered the victory God had given him over the lion and the bear back in his shepherding days. You must do that too. Listen: 'This I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness' (Lamentations 3:21-23). Hit your replay button!

3) Use the enemy's sword against him! Listen: 'Therefore David...took his sword... and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled' (1 Samuel 17:51). You must be willing to fight with the same level of intensity as your enemy. You must learn from him, and then apply it to his weakness. And never assume that he's dead when he's just dazed. If you don't cut his head off he will return and sneak up on you another day. (apply this to problems – not literally to people!) Go for a permanent solution, not a short-term fix. Fortify yourself with prayer, renew your mind with Bible reading, reach for the support that is available through God's family. Above all, remember, your strength is not in yourself but in God. With Him on your side, you can't lose.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to tackle the situations that I face so that by your power and strength I can overcome and come through to finish! In Jesus name, Amen

Slaying giants . . . my sling shot continues to look pretty lame in my hand in these recent days. Dad's in the hospital fighting for his life, Mom's depressed -going into dementia, my 27 years old son lost his wife-to-be by death, a couple from my congregation is to be wed in Sept. and are telling me they want less time for marriage worship and more time for partying at the reception, and another couple is struggling to see the Spirit at work in their lives and how if only they trust in Him, they have a great possibility of staying married. And so life goes. I'm not young and naive, I realize life is full of 'punches.' But I am so exhausted this morning and I really don't look forward to this day -even as blessed as I am, healthy otherwise -unlike others with insurmountable need. Please pray for me because I am of the flesh and I need to know all the more that everything is in God's control and that, indeed, the giants will be slain. Thank you for your ministry. Many times your words have encouraged me, given many hope in the faith journey, helping us to lift our eyes toward Jesus Christ.
