His Wonderful Riches

And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19

When Joseph Leek died he left $1.8 million to charity. Nothing unusual about that, right? Nothing, except that this 90-year-old Brit had spent his entire life in poverty! He wore secondhand clothes and watched TV at a neighbor’s house to save electricity. Another homeless woman in New Jersey died in a rundown welfare hotel, even though she had $1 million in savings. Why? A psychologist who specializes in money issues says, 'People who pretend to be poor are often just terrified they will not have enough for emergencies, so they keep quiet for fear their money will be taken away.'

Many people who think they are being conservative financially are actually fearful; frugality is just the mask that covers their deep-rooted insecurity. If you are not enjoying God's provision today, the problem's not with Him! His Word says you will never be in any situation where He will not take care of you. (Stop and read Psalm 37:25; Isaiah 48:17; Luke 6:38; 2 Corinthians 9:8). No child of God has ever exhausted their Father's supply, or gone wanting while trusting Him. Can you think of one?

The Bible says, 'God will use His wonderful riches...to give you everything you need.' Whose riches? God's! How rich is He? By contrast, Bill Gates is in the gutter. So on this day, God wants you to think big and attempt more! Only by making withdrawals based on faith, can you discover the 'riches' you have on deposit with Him. That usually means giving at a higher level, following God's leadings, and opening yourself to criticism. But it is a Scriptural strategy that works!

Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to know, and use, your riches that you have given me in Jesus Christ. In His Precious Name, Amen

I love Philippians and Paul's attitude of being thankful in every situation he finds himself. My confusion comes because there are situations in which I couldn't have Paul's attitude of gratitude. The widespread famines that have plagued Africa in which mothers are forced to watch their children starve to death is the first that comes to mind. The Holocaust is another. God's grace is sufficient, but I don't think I could be thankful if I were watching my child starve or be tortured to death.

We have to be careful to realize that this doesn't necessarily apply to PHYSICAL riches. God promises to meet our NEEDS---NOT our WANTS! If we get the two confused & think that He will provide ANYTHING we want, that's not Biblical! He knows what will be best for us & He will only give us as HE determines. He will, however, give us unlimited SPIRITUAL riches, as He has already given us forgiveness of sins & life eternal through Jesus. Beware of the "health, wealth & prosperity Gospel"!
