Mutual Support

“Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
Galatians 6:2

In today’s Scripture verse we see the command to bear one another’s burdens. But this is more than a command. It is a wonderful privilege to bear the burdens of those around us.

God didn’t intend that some of us be just “bearers” and some of us be exclusively “bearers.” We have the opportunity to bear the burdens of others around us – the common life struggles of sadness, defeat, temptation and despair – but we also have the privilege of allowing others to bear our burdens. We can easily grow weary in doing good when we’re always “bearing” and never allowing others to bear our burdens.

This truth argues loudly for the vulnerability that is vital in any loving relationship. This vulnerability is manifested in a willingness to admit need, share struggles and receive support. When this vulnerability is given and shared in a loving relationship each person can experience healed hurts, gained freedom, and a deeper trust.

During your faith journey you will experience many different seasons of life. At times you may experience transition and uncertainty in work and ministry, and these things may give rise to self-doubt and “faith stretching.” What a blessing it is to have a friend (and to be the friend) who will be there to bear the burdens, provide encouragement and give companionship.

Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, You provide each day the opportunities to walk alongside family and friends. Help me seek opportunities to bear burdens, provide encouragement and give companionship to those in need. Also help me to be vulnerable to others by admitting my needs, sharing my struggles and receiving their support. I pray this in Jesus’ Name. Amen
