Bearing the Burdens of Others

“When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up - one on one side, one on the other - so that his hands remained steady till sunset.”
Exodus 17:12

The armies of the Lord prevailed again the enemy of Aaron and Hur provided support. Joshua led the Israelites into battle as Moses stood with the staff of God outstretched over the valley below. As Moses lifted up the staff, Joshua and the Israelites prevailed, but when Moses grew tired and lowered the staff, the enemies prevailed. Although no one made a plea for them to come, Aaron and Hur noticed the need, took the initiative, and came to render support.

True support means noticing needs, taking initiative, and quietly giving of oneself – oftentimes without being asked.

An obvious principle in today’s Scripture passage is that the one who is overwhelmed when left alone can be victorious when supported. And Aaron and Hur left Moses to bear the weight of the staff alone, he would have collapsed, and the people of Israel would have suffered certain defeat.

God made us to need the support of others. We need the strong, loving support of others. Support is not standing at a distance giving advice. Rather it’s hands-on time when we urge other to allow us to bear their burdens with them.

Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, help me to lift up my brother and sister when they are weak and in need. Make me to be sensitive and observant of the needs of others. Empower me to stand alongside those in need so that I can encourage them and support them. Lord, also send those who would do the same for me. I pray this in Jesus’ Name. Amen
