Warning Signs

“He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.”
Proverbs 10:17

As you travel down life’s highway, you may come to a fork in the road, where two signs greet you: (1) Receive Reproof, and (2) Go Astray. Unlike rebuke, reproof is often not spoken but comes through natural consequences. For example, if you stay up late watching a movie, the natural consequence will be that you will be tired at work the next day.

In relationships, the reproof for failing to meet family members’ needs may come as they seek to meet those needs through others. A lonely spouse may escape into friendship with others or a lonely child might seek acceptance with their peers at the price of their personal safety.

If a spouse or child turns to others for what God wants you to provide, than you are at a fork in the road. You have to decide: Will I receive this reproof, or will I go astray? Will I heed God’s Word, which tells me to care for my family, or will I continue to ignore their needs? Will I head God’s Word, which tells me to comfort my spouse as God has comforted me, or will I continue to neglect or overlook them? Will I accept my children as God has accepted me, or will I continue to base my love on their performance?

There are important relationships at stake on your journey down life’s roadway. Your relationship with God needs to be filled with devotion. Your relationship with your spouse needs to be cherished. Your relationship with your children needs to be nurtured. Because of these relationships, there’s too much at stack to go astray.

Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, as I travel down life’s highway please bless me with wisdom and discernment. Help me to be a faithful, obedient and available servant of God to You and those you have placed into my life. With Your help, may I be open to receive reproof of my wrongdoings and not go astray. I pray this in Jesus’ Name. Amen
