The Ten Commandments

Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell the Israelites this: 'You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven...'"
Exodus 20:22

A missionary who was heavy on "thou-shalt nots," was preaching to an elderly African chief. When he finished, the chief said, "You mean I can't steal my neighbor's wife? Or his cattle? Or ambush and kill my enemies anymore?" "Exactly!" said the missionary. Sadly, the chief replied, "But I can't do those things anyway, I'm too old! It sounds to me like being old and being a Christian are the same thing!" It's a common misconception. People think the Ten Commandments steal the joy from life instead of adding to it. But that was never God's plan. God intended them to be timeless principles that make your life richer and more fulfilling. After all, don't things go better when you love God, respect your parents, and are truthful and kind? We talk about "breaking" the Ten Commandments, but actually they're unbreakable. If you jumped from a 40-storey balcony you'd be defying the law of gravity, but the law of gravity wouldn't be broken, you would! Just as there are indestructible scientific laws, God's commandments are unshakeable, unchanging spiritual principles that are more dependable than natural laws. They aren't just suggestions, they're rules! God said, " I have spoken to you from heaven." That makes them important! During the next few days and next week we will take a look at all Ten Commandments. Numbers 1-3 deals with your love for God; the 4th with your church; the 5th & 7th with your family; and the 6th, 8th, 9th, and 10th with how to treat others. And they're still the rules for quality living!

Prayer
Heavenly Father – help me to always remember that you always do what is best for me – and never to hinder me of joy! In Jesus' Name, Amen

Tim, you said that the 10 commandments are not just suggestions, they are rules. They are more than that. God didn't flip a coin to decide that lying was wrong. It is wrong because it goes against His very nature. The 10 commandments are an expression of who God is and that is not only unbreakable, it is unchangeable.
