Your Life-Purpose Statement
Part 2
For when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed.
Acts 13:36
It may take you weeks or months to draft your life-purpose statement. You'll go through several re-writes before you get to your final form. Even then, you'll make changes as time goes by and God gives you more insight. But once you have it, use it as a daily reminder. Solomon advised, "It will be good to keep these things in mind so that you are ready to repeat them" (Proverbs 22:18). It's been suggested that you develop your life-purpose statement based on what you'd like people to say about you at your funeral. That may not be a good idea. The only thing that matters is what God says about you. Paul writes, "Our purpose is to please God, not people" (1 Thessalonians 2:4). If you want an epitaph to build your life on, here's one: "David served the purpose of God in his generation..." There is no greater epitaph than that! Imagine it chiseled on your tombstone, that you did the eternal (God's) purpose in a contemporary and timely way (in your generation). Neither past nor future generations can fulfill God's purposes in this generation. Only you can. Like Esther, God created you "for such a time as this" (Esther 4:14). God's still looking for people to use. Listen: "The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him" (2 Chronicles 16:9). Can God use you? Are you willing to serve His purposes during your life span? Your answer to that question determines everything!
