Words

Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.
1 Peter 2:1-2

All too often, we underestimate the importance of the words we speak. Whether we realize it or not, our words carry great weight and great power, especially when we are addressing our loved ones.

The Bible reminds us that “Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing” (Proverbs 12:18). And Christ taught that “For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34). Does the overflow of your heart produce a continuing flow of uplifting words for your loved ones? And do you express those feelings many times each day? I hope so.

When you’re angry, do you reign in your tongue? Proverbs 29:11 teaches, “A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.” So, if you’d you like to build healthier relationships – and if you’d like to keep building them day by day – think before you speak. Avoid angry outbursts. Refrain from constant criticism. Terminate tantrums. Negate negativism. Cease from being cynical. Instead, use Christ as your guide, and speak words of encouragement, hope, praise, and above all, love – and speak them often.

Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, You have warned me that I will be judged by the words I speak. Help me to keep mindful that I have influence on many people and that I am to build up, encourage and give hope. May the words I speak glorify You and encourage others to seek You. I pray this in Jesus’ Name. Amen
