Advice To Senior Citizens
The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;
Psalms 92:12
An old couple went for a walk to discuss their upcoming wedding. Passing a pharmacy, they stepped in to ask if they sold arthritis pills, heart medication, and wheelchairs. ‘Sure, what’d you need?’ said the pharmacist. ‘Nothing’, they replied, ‘we’d like to register here for our wedding gifts!’
Growing old isn’t for the faint-hearted! Someone said, ‘If you’re only as old as you feel, I’m 150!’ If you feel like that, read on: (1) Remember the basics. Your present habits affect how you fare in later life, so: (a) respect your body with nutritious food and regular exercise (b) old age is when broadness of the mind and narrowness of the waist change places, so stretch yourself mentally by continuing to learn. You don’t just grow old - you get old because you stop growing! (c) feed your spirit daily through God’s Word and prayer; they’re great battery-chargers!
(2) Stay involved. Listen: ‘Wisdom belongs to the aged, and understanding to those who have lived many years’ (Job 12:12). You’ve a lifetime of experience and wisdom, so share it. Staying involved increases your life expectancy, improves your health, and enhances your sense of value.
(3) Be optimistic. If you’ve lived a while, you know that once you’re over the hill you pick up speed. But here are two great reasons for optimism: (a) God says that in old age you can ‘flourish’ and ‘remain vital’. (b) Growing older is just the final leg of the journey between here and going ‘to be with Christ; which is far better’ (Philippians 1:23).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to grow old with Your grace. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
