BURNOUT - PT 2
Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12:3
Friday we talked about how to avoid physical burnout, but it’s just as easy to experience mental and emotional burnout. What’s the answer? Listen: ‘Consider Him [His lifestyle and His teachings] lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.’ That means: (1) Get rid of your negative thinking ‘let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think’’ (Romans 12:2). Ever notice how some people on a roller coaster close their eyes, clench their teeth and wait for the ride to end, while upfront the wide-eyed thrill-seekers relish every peak and plunge? They’re all on the same trip, but their attitudes are entirely different! You can’t always control what happens to you, but you can decide how you’ll respond to it. For instance, choosing to see problems as opportunities for growth develops you instead of draining you. (2) Get physical. Remember, ‘Physical exercise has some value’’ (1 Timothy 4:8). Think of all the things you do that have no value! You don’t have to drive 40 minutes to a health club, and then wait 30 minutes to get on the treadmill for 20 minutes! Start walking! A brisk walk isn’t only good for you physically; it works wonders for you mentally. Come on lazy bones, exercise! (3) Practice scriptural affirmations. Paul writes, “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly” (Colossians 3:16). But before that can happen, you must first seed your mind with the Scriptures, then meditate on them until they begin to root and grow within you. That way they’ll be there when you need them.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, although I cannot control what happens around me, I can, by your strength, control how I respond. Give me that strength that breathes new life into this old body! In Jesus’ Name, Amen
