BIG-HEARTED PEOPLE

The greatest among you will be your servant.
Matthew 23:11

Years ago, a rider on horseback came across a squad of soldiers trying to move a big tree. He noticed a well-groomed Colonel standing by giving orders. But the tree was just too heavy for the men to move. ‘Why don’t you help them’’ the man on horseback asked the important Colonel. ‘Me? Why I’m a Colonel, Sir’, he responded. The rider dismounted and took his place beside the soldiers. Smiling at them encouragingly he said, ‘Now, all together boys, heave!’ The big tree moved easily with the help of the additional man. The stranger then silently mounted his horse. As he prepared to leave he said to the Colonel, ‘Next time you have a tree to move, send for your Commander-in-Chief!’ They were stunned! It was only then that the Colonel and his men realized that the stranger was none other than General George Washington. Nobody is too great to help others! In truth, it’s only a little person who will fail to do so. Jesus said, ‘But the greatest among you shall be your servant’. Then he took a towel and began to wash their feet. Insecure people strut, hoping you’ll buy the image they project. But it’s a miserable way to live and a façade that’s impossible to maintain. So they live defensively, afraid that if others knew them like they know themselves, they’d be rejected. But the big-hearted, like Washington, love people, not crowds; seek solutions, not credit. They find both dignity and joy in serving - do you? Are you a Servant-Leader like Jesus?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me be more like you and serve those in need. Help me see that greatness is in weakness and being a servant. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen
