THROUGH THE VALLEY

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalms 23:4

Grazing left the pasture bare, so the shepherd had to lead his flock to new fields. The journey was usually through dark valleys and narrow mountain passes. With his staff, he gently nudged them forward and with his rod he protected them. Some day, our Shepherd will do the same with us. He’ll come and guide us to His house through the valley of the shadow of death. People who know nothing else about the Bible know Psalm 23. It’s quoted at the graves of paupers and carved on the headstones of kings. Why are these words so loved? For a couple of reasons: (1) Because we all have to face death. It’s an appointment none of us can avoid, cancel or escape: even those who eat right and take their vitamins. Exercise may buy us a few more heartbeats, medicine may grant us a few more years, but in the end, there is an end! (2) Because we don’t have to face death alone. Jesus said, ‘If I go and prepare a place for you’’ (John 14:3). Simon Cameron told the story of an old Scottish Christian on her deathbed whose pastor asked, ‘Maggie, are you afraid to die’’ She replied, ‘No, my Father owns the land on both sides of the river.’ Rejoice, you won’t have to make the journey alone. Furthermore, whatever you give up in this life, will be nothing by contrast to what you’ll inherit in the next.

Prayer
Heavenly Father – thank you for giving me eternity with you – that is certain and secure! Knowing that – I can face whatever comes my way – even death, which begins my eternity with you. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
