WHEN YOU NEED HELP

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, Psalms 23:2

He leads me. God isn’t behind you shouting, ‘Go!’ He’s in front of you clearing the path and showing you the way. At the bend He says, ‘Turn here.’ At the rise He whispers, ‘Step up.’ At the pothole He warns, ‘Watch your foot.’ He tells us what we need to know, when we need to know it. Listen: ‘‘we will find grace to help us when we need it’ (Hebrews 4:16). Note the word, ‘When.’ You say, ‘I don’t know what I’ll do if my husband dies.’ You will - when the time comes. ‘I don’t know how I’ll ever pay these bills.’ Jehovah Jireh, the Lord who provides, will be there for you - when the time comes. ‘I’m not qualified to handle this, there’s just too much I don’t know.’ Maybe you want to know everything too soon. God will give you wisdom - when the time comes. The key is: meet today’s problems with today’s strength and leave tomorrow’s in God’s capable hands! During World War II, Arthur Sulzberger, publisher of the New York Times, found it hard to sleep or rid his mind of fear, until he adopted these words from the hymn Lead Kindly Light: ‘I do not ask to see the distant scene; one step enough for me.’ God isn’t going to let you see the distant scene either. He promises a lamp for your feet, not a crystal ball for your future. ‘He leads me’ and that’s enough for today! And tomorrow? “We will find grace to help us when we need it” (Hebrews 4:16).

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for giving me what I need when I need it – and only just enough of what I need to know. In Jesus’ Precious Name, Amen
