Effective Leadership

"Watch me," he told them. "Follow my lead. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly as I do.”  Judges 7:17

The leaders who ‘go the distance’, understand that when you care more about your workers than you do about your work, you get higher profits and happier people. Three things set such leaders apart: (1) They’re facilitators. They realize: (a) nobody’s ever what they ought to be until they’re first doing what they ought to be doing (b) the way to accomplish their own goals is to help others reach theirs. (2) They’re courteous. They never look down or talk down. They don’t have one set of manners for the important people and another for the less important. To them, everybody is important, because everybody has God-given potential. Servant-hearted leaders just work to bring it out! (3) They’re decisive. Listen to Joshua’s challenge: ‘‘Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15). No waffling! People need direction; you’ve got to be decisive! You’ll only be remembered for two things: the problems you caused through indecision or the ones you solved through clear direction. Sometimes that means going out on a limb, because that’s where the fruit is. Why don’t you pray this prayer:

Lord it’s not easy being in the spotlight. It’s lonely, scary, and often the last place I want to be. This task is so far beyond me that there’s nothing I can do but throw myself on You. Help me to exercise my authority with grace. Keep me strong. Give me courage and wisdom. My heart is to lead with Your heart – give me the love it takes to lead well. Amen.

Thanks Tim, I really needed this one today. Not to embarrass you, but you are such a mentor to me in Christlike leadership and accepting the COST of discipleship when the going gets rough. I remember at Concordia, John and I had a N.T. prof. quoting Luther (regarding radical, Christian leadership like Jesus): "SIN BOLDLY!!" I've had the "sin" part down since birth! lol

Gratefully, in His grace and mercy,

    Linda
