ServingI have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. John 13:15
Is your ambition to serve or be served? Ponder that before you answer! Jesus didn’t wait for His disciples to make the first move; He taught them by going first. He 'rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel... poured water... and began to wash the disciples’ feet... ' (John 13:4-5). Incredible! The Master steps down to become one of them - and serve! He laid aside His garments - not only for them, but for us too. He came to earth stripped of the glory He’d enjoyed in heaven with His Father. Jesus had no time for form or fashion. Real ministry is done with a complete loss of distinction. To make a lasting impact on these men, He had to cover Himself in humility. As He kneeled to wash their feet, Peter was embarrassed to think that his Lord would allow Himself to be seen in such a demeaning light. Then Jesus spoke, 'I have set you an example that you should do as I have done... no servant is greater than his master... Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them' (John 13:15-17). Want to be blessed? Serve! If you believe that God wants to use you, don’t join the ‘spiritual elitists’ who are impressed by their own speeches and accomplishments. Lay aside everything you privately glory in, and pick up the towel of servanthood. Don’t wait for others. Somebody at your table needs to start the trend. Let it be you today!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to put aside self and be a servant to others – as You were. It is in serving that I learn to lead. In Jesus’ Precious, Holy Name, Amen
