Throw Off Your Coat!

Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.  Mark 10:50

In Jesus' day, certain people were identified by the clothes they wore. What Pharisees wore said, 'I'm religious.' What Roman soldiers wore said, 'I'm powerful.' What beggars wore said, 'I'm down and out.' When blind Bartimaeus heard the voice of Jesus, he jumped up, threw off his coat, moved in the direction of the Master and received a new pair of eyes, a new identity and a new future (Mark 10:46-52). Others probably chose the garments Bartimaeus wore; they might even have put them on him. But that day he decided, 'I don't have to wear these anymore.' Neither do you; Christ can change your self-worth, your outlook and even your connection to the past. Listen: 'If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new' (2 Corinthians 5:17). But you can't just sit there and do nothing. You've got to move! The moment Bartimaeus heard the voice of Jesus, he 'jumped up, left his coat there and went.' He (a) didn't sit on the sidelines while the answer passed him by (b) was too desperate to stay in the place of no vision and no provision (c) wouldn't be silenced by his critics and miss his day of grace. No, he cried out for help, threw off his pride, jumped up and ran to Jesus. When he did, everything changed for the better - everything! And He'll change your life too, if you'll come to Him today.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me shed off the extra clothing that I don’t need that holds me back from following you.  Give me a new beginning today as I seek to serve you by serving those in need around me.  In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen
